How recognition programs are evolving in hybrid workplaces
With so many businesses now supporting remote and hybrid working arrangements for their employees, the way teams stay connected has completely changed. A big part of the consideration for company leaders with this new shift is how to make sure all of their teams still feel like they’re a valued part of the business.
Unfortunately, typical morale-boosting activities often found in office settings don’t have the same impact for remote working teams. This is where having a dedicated recognition program in place can be really helpful.
By making employee recognition a priority in hybrid working settings, you’re able to build a much stronger team dynamic. This guest post from Cindy Mielke discusses some effective ways to do this.
Centralized Recognition Platforms
One of the challenges with creating employee recognition programs for hybrid teams is that many times, employees may live outside time zones that the rest of the business is in. This can make it hard to communicate how programs work and offer recognition and rewards.
Having a centralized platform where all digital “shout-outs” or awards are given to employees can be a great way to keep distributed teams connected. Businesses can use platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams to help facilitate this. This allows them to introduce the program more seamlessly with their entire stack and simplify employee adoption.
More Peer-to-Peer Focus
While most employees appreciate the occasional praise from their managers, many appreciate it when other employees recognize their hard work as well. This is leading to more of a shift for a lot of companies when it comes to introducing peer-to-peer acknowledgment platforms.
Most employees who manage various projects or work together in larger teams understand, more than the leadership team, just how much can go into completing certain tasks. Creating a format that allows these employees to recognize each other more regularly can be a great way to help improve team morale and build a deeper sense of camaraderie.
Rewards are Hyper-Personalized and Flexible
Employee recognition programs have been around for a while, and there are plenty of formats and templates businesses can follow to start introducing the same to their organizations. However, the authenticity of these programs is really important, and trying to force-feed a one-size-fits-all approach to reward types and cadence can seem forced and not really genuine.
Having a more flexible and personalized approach to managing employee rewards can go a long way in building better relationships with local and remote working teams. Some ways to do this include introducing flexible lifestyle spending accounts, stipends for maintaining a home office setup, or simply giving employees more options when receiving a reward from the business.
Offering flexible gift cards or other monetary rewards that allow employees to choose where and how they use them, can show that you’re not just handing out the same rewards to everyone without thinking about whether they actually hold value to the recipient.
Workflow Integrations
Timing is often an underrated but vital component to making sure employee rewards have the right impact. While having a program to recognize the hard work that employees put in each day is commendable, waiting too long to hand these out to employees can have an opposite effect from what you’re hoping for.
A big part of providing employee rewards is to help reinforce good habits. But if employees aren’t seeing recognition for their efforts quickly enough, they may think that the company simply doesn’t care about the additional work they’re committing to.
Having an employee recognition program built directly into employee workloads can be a great way to provide real-time rewards to employees based on their performance throughout the weeks, months, or years. These types of formats can be great for remote working teams that may not be working the same time as their leadership teams.
Rather than letting good working habits slip through the cracks, integrated recognition platforms can provide real-time rewards while sending reminders to leadership teams to track an employee’s performance and offer praise as needed.
Emphasis on Wellbeing and Work-Life Balance
Rewarding employees shouldn’t just be limited to something that has monetary value. There are other significant benefits you can introduce to your teams to show them you appreciate and value them as individuals, not just employees.
For example, many companies are now extending their programs to help celebrate certain behaviors that help employees lead healthier, more fulfilling lives. This can be done in several ways, such as creating new ways to congratulate employees for setting boundaries, like fully disconnecting on vacation, or for showing empathy and supporting a teammate’s well-being through mental health programs or in-office and remote-setting company socials.
Celebrating Non-Work Milestones
The casual “water cooler” conversations that used to help employees get to know each other better have pretty much gone away with newer working settings. To fill that gap, recognition programs are expanding to celebrate individuals in many different ways.
Acknowledging work anniversaries, birthdays, and other important life events can be another way to create deeper personal connections with teams. Taking a moment to celebrate these non-work milestones is a small but impactful way to build a sense of community and show your team that you care about things other than profits and deadlines.
Data and Metrics Driven Strategy
Tracking key performance metrics in your recognition program can help to stay more engaged with employees, ensuring the efforts the business is making are resonating with all employees.
This data-driven approach allows you to spot imbalances or cultural issues early on and make targeted improvements, turning your recognition efforts into a measurable strategy for building a better workplace.
Choose The Right Recognition Strategies for Your Team
When you build an employee recognition program that focuses on peer-to-peer appreciation, fairness, and flexibility, you ensure everyone on your team feels seen and valued, regardless of where they work.
This is a great way to continue to build a strong company culture and will inevitably help you to improve cohesion and collaboration as your business grows over time.
