Boss's Day

3 Simple Ways to Celebrate Boss’s Day

Posted on · Posted in Motivation, The Happy Workplace

October 16th is celebrated as Boss’s Day in the U.S. and Canada. Although criticised by some as yet another “Hallmark Day”, there is still much to be said for such occasions.

Like many annual, landmark days, it can be a useful prompt. Perhaps an opportunity to reflect on that most critical of working relationships, between boss and employee.

Or it can be the chance to show gratitude or respect, on things we may overlook or take for granted. It may also be a timely moment to build bridges or to offer olive branches, where things may have been difficult. It’s surprising how little things can make a big difference and Boss’s Day might be just the time to take the initiative.

So here are three simple ways for happy managers to celebrate Boss’s Day. We’re not advocating expensive gifts or anything time consuming. Our tips are all easy to do, all free, and all likely to make someone feel better! They’re based on a tip we referred to in an earlier blog post – “praisin’ is amazin'”. But they’re not necessarily what you might expect…

Praise your boss

This is probably the most obvious, so we may as well start here! Take the time to say something nice or something positive about your boss. You don’t need to overdo it, just make the effort and be sincere. It would be better to say something in person but if that’s not possible, try sending an email he/she will be glad to open, rather than one with the problems we often bring to their attention!

What’s that you say? You don’t get on with your boss? Well, perhaps today is the day you make a start on changing that! Read our famous leadership quote for an insight into how one great leader showed the way.

Praise yourself

Why not celebrate Boss’s Day by giving yourself a pat on the back. You’re a boss and you deserve it!

Whether or not you get any acknowledgement from the people you manage, take some time to reflect on your own strengths and successes. Here are some quotes to help you make the most of Boss’s Day:

“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” – Buddha

“What you think about yourself is much more important than what others think of you.” – Marcus Annaeus Seneca

“Lend yourself to others, but give yourself to yourself.” – Michel de Montaigne

“The way you treat yourself sets the standard for others.” – Sonya Friedman

“The greatest success is successful self-acceptance.” – Ben Sweet

Praise your staff

But it’s Boss’s Day! So what’s this doing here, you ask yourself! Well we like to prompt you to think about the counter-intuitive so why not give praise on your day, rather than seek it?

What better way to enjoy your role as a boss than to build a stronger relationship with the people you manage? Sending them a message on Boss’s Day will probably have far greater impact than at any other time.

Why not let them know how much you appreciate their efforts to help you do your job. Let’s face it, without them there would be no Boss’s Day to celebrate! And, as the saying goes, it’s far better to give than to receive.

Have a good Boss’s Day

Finally, remember it’s the little things that count. You don’t need to buy anything to acknowledge your boss on Boss’s Day – now that would be just a “Hallmark Day”. But you can still impress with something that’s thoughtful and free!
